GKids Theatrical Anime Screenings

I've getting into these limited run anime screenings distributed by GKids at theaters that carry Fathom Events. I saw Kiki's Delivery Service back in July and Millennium Actress two weeks ago. Tomorrow night I plan to catch My Neighbor Totoro, and next month they're debuting a film by Trigger called Promare, which looks to be a mashup of Gurren Lagann and Burning Rangers. This has renewed my interest in long-form anime features and spurred me to catch up on (namely Ghibli) stuff I'd missed, I recommend checking them out if a theater near you runs them.

Re: GKids Theatrical Anime Screenings

These seem to have been doing really well and the fact that they're getting to premiere the new Trigger flick is a pretty big grab, though I'm not sure how well "crazy" Trigger would click with a more casual audience they seem to be courting with some of these runs.

Re: GKids Theatrical Anime Screenings

I bought a ticket for their Heaven's Feel II screening so I've been getting ads for all their latest stuff, which I don't mind in the least. I'm definitely interested in the Trigger movie.

Re: GKids Theatrical Anime Screenings

I'm gonna try to see it as well, and hopefully I've talked my younger sister to come with. She's rewatched Kill la Kill at least 3 times already, and I figured she'd enjoy this too.

Can anyone vouch for Secret of Arietty? I remember my film crit professor watching it when it first hit theaters (spurned on by my paper on Miyazaki and Castle of Cagliostro, apparently), and saying it didn't do much for him.

Re: GKids Theatrical Anime Screenings

I can vouch for Arietty being boring and forgettable. I saw it in theaters and it didn't do anything for me.

Re: GKids Theatrical Anime Screenings

Promare was raucous. I didn't expect many people to be there for the sub showing but the auditorium was pretty packed. It's got the kind of silliness you'd expect from something with its pedigree, but it makes for breezy escapist fun. I wonder if it started life pitched as a 12 episode series, it's got little time to spare for side characters.

Re: GKids Theatrical Anime Screenings

My theater was packed too, there was LOTS of clapping and hollering but always at the right moments in the story. I had a great time, very glad I caught it in theaters.

Yeah, these being such limited run kind of makes it inconvenient to catch everything you want to see, but it's still cool to see these in theaters at all. It's getting me to see films I probably wouldn't seek out otherwise.

I might even try to catch one of the Alien showings in October, never seen that one on the big screen.

Re: GKids Theatrical Anime Screenings

I rather enjoyed The Secret World of Arrietty. It's a very good looking film, there's some fun to be had picking out the little details of what human objects make up the Borrowers' environment. It's a slow burn as far as pacing goes but I never felt like any screen time was wasted, and the emotional denouement at the end felt earned... even though the dub almost derails it with some cornball dialog.

Re: GKids Theatrical Anime Screenings

Welp, the Konotuba movie might've been the straw that broke the "watch this show literally everyone who's seen it says is good" camel. Seriously, that came outta nowhere, and my sister seemed mildly excited when I told her about it.

Can't wait to watch the Alien showing in October...!

Re: GKids Theatrical Anime Screenings

I've been checking the konosuba showing because the tickets haven't been up for online preorder for weeks, finally was able to snag my ticket.

Excited for Alien this Wednesday *_*

Re: GKids Theatrical Anime Screenings

Seeing Princess Mononoke (sub) tonight.

I usually prefer to see the dubs, but I've been seeing the subs when I forget to catch the dub screening. And I realized I don't like the dub versions of the vocal songs in the Ghibli movies. Even though I imagine Mononoke doesn't have any, I don't recall if Nausicaa did.

Re: GKids Theatrical Anime Screenings

I keep thinking about this movie and what a gut punch it is and how I just want the characters to live and be happy. Maybe it's because I've been watching too much Armored Trooper VOTOMS where the characters are unlikable assholes!
