Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

I beat all 25 main puzzles in TIS-100! cool It was my first Zachtronics game way back in the day, I'm really happy I went back to it and wrapped it up. I completely loved it and really wanna play more, I'm eyeballing either Shenzen I/O or Opus Magnum.

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

Please send me your spirit energy, I'm gonna try to wrap up Suikoden 2 before the sockscast this weekend

I did the big three part Luca fight and really enjoyed myself playing the game for the first time in like ten play hours... then they immediately brought back the fuckin' vampire. I know I'm getting decently to the end, just gotta push through.

Thank you I feel energized... now I have the capacity to get through the full third of the game that happens after they kill the one character bringing any energy to the story

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

Been playing Deponia (by Daedalic) and also a neat Visual Novel called Misadventures of Laura Silver Chapter I since yesterday. Deponia is a point-and-click adventure game, and it's plenty funny, but the puzzles can be frustrating. I keep getting stuck.

Misadventures of Laura Silver is so PRETTY!! Also the writing is great, I like the characters a whole bunch! You have to think hard on the multiple-choice questions (there's a lot of those) and preferably fast too, because some questions only give you so much time. I've gotten two bad endings so far, and I've only played for a few hours. I should probably say that it's a mystery/detective sort of story, set in the thirties in Che.. Czh... Chzec... I can't even spell it. ._.;
I like the jazzy tunes, too!

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

I played Super Mario World up until the point when I felt like stopping (which seems to be a recurring theme with me and Mario games), meaning I got to Bowser's castle and beat the game without making a beeline to the end from Star Road ASAP. I feel like people who want to get the most out of World will find all the hidden exits and do all the SPECIAL levels, but like with everything after the NSMB era* those things just feel like fan-made levels and I don't usually feel the need to complete them all.

Been playing some Splatoon 2 multiplayer, I'm still not good at it by any means, but I'm getting familiar with the game modes that aren't Turf War. Salmon Run (Splatoon 2's horde mode) can be really mean in that you can get bad luck with some of the spawns or the random weapon it gives you won't be suitable at all, and the tendency for other players to get DC'ed mid match doesn't help matters. xD

*aside from Super Princess Peach, which I close to 100%ed, but that game was developed by TOSE.

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

From Mario World on I've felt the Special World levels are "the good part" of Mario games and I've resented how they've locked them away in post-game purgatory instead of putting them in the main quest.

I'm detoxing from Suikoden with Legend of Mana, it's so magical and nice ;_; Excited to see how it wraps up.

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

Been playing Perceptions of the Dead 2 - yet another visual novel! I'm playing allll the clicky games, lately!

It ties together the stories from the first game and I just like it a whole great bunch! It also has more content than I expected it to have! So I have to stop myself from steamrolling through the whole thing, I want it to last. Because it's ultimately still not that long, it's just longer than the first game. Or at least I think, I haven't finished everything yet. :S

How do I describe this duology? It's... Spooky, but not really scary and it has this dreamlike quality to it. It does feature plenty of suspense. Also, the characters are fun and lifelike! It starts out in the first game with several separate... What feels like ghost story tellings, only not quite? You can tell it doesn't quite fit the format of a ghost story, but it still very much gives of that sort of vibe, especially with how things start. But as you may have guessed by now, it revolves around ghosts and related supernatural stuff. But it's still more of a fun adventure with a dose of mystery, rather than a horror game.

I was feeling kind of bummy today, but playing it for a bit picked me up again.

Anyway, I love it! Ghosty-approved! big_smile

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

I went ahead and picked up the Octo Expansion, kind of as a last hurrah with Splatoon 2 given my general malaise with the multiplayer (it's still fun in short burst but I don't see myself progressing enough in the ranked battles to unlock league battles). OE is a strictly single player affair, with relatively short but challenging maps, and without the aggravating overworld parts that the vanilla single player had. Some of these levels are tough already, and I can forsee much nashing of teeth if I want to complete all of them. Pit deaths galore, especially with rail riding or having to traverse a series of unfurlers.

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

Been playing Shovel Knight: King of Cards and Shovel Knight: Showdown lately.

King of Cards... Just isn't very fun. The levels are quite short, and while they work with King Knight's moveset, they just feel rather bland, there's nothing to make playing through them fun. I think part of the problem is just that King Knight doesn't feel very good to play. He's kind of sluggish and sloppy and his moves just aren't fun or interesting to use. There are a lot more levels than in the previous titles, though, but only about a third of them have a boss battle. The much-touted cardgame just feels... Not fun at all. I was fairly open to what it might be, but by the time I understood all the rules I just felt like... 'Nope, fuck it, not going to play this'. Overall it's just kind of a wet blanket. It's a bummer, because I've been waiting for this game to come out since maybe January this year. sad

Shovel Knight: Showdown is... How do I put this? It has some issues for sure, like I've had trouble with the team colours matching the colour of the background making it hard to see what's happening. And it's the kind of game that is just overall hard to see what's happening when there are many players on the field, not unlike Super Smash Bros..

There are two main battle modes, one where you have to grab a certain number of gems before the opponent, if you take out your opponent (or they take you out) they drop one or more gems they are carrying, depending on the specific rules of the match. It's kind of... Eh. I don't particularly like it. There is one variation on this where the gems spawn in little glass bubbles with wings that you have to break before you can grab the gem, which somehow feels a little more fun, but it still has issues and isn't anything you shouldn't miss.

The other mode is essentially a stock match where you just beat up your opponent (until they run out of health), and the objective is to be the last one standing. I like this mode better, but it's no Smash Bros. There are definitely games that do this better, and you'd probably be better off playing one of those.

Still, I've been playing this game more than I expected I would, and I'm not entirely sure why. So it's got something sort of fun going about it, which is a lot more than I can say for King of Cards.

I really quite like a lot of the characters movesets, they all feel unique, and they did some really cool things with a lot of them. I feel like some good inspiration could be taken from here. It makes me wish they'd just picked a character from this game (other than King Knight) and made a platformer for that character, that probably would've been a better game than King of Cards. I rather like Mona and Reize, myself. Specter Knight is also fun, but they already made a game for Specter Knight. A platformer with Reize would've been great. sad

I'm also uncertain as to game balance for Showdown, as the AI is pretty dumb, even at the highest possible setting, and I haven't had any other human players to test it with. Because this is entirely made to be a multiplayer game. Even if there are AI bots you can add, and there is a singleplayer mode akin to Super Smash Bros.' One-player/Classic mode. But what I'm trying to say is: There are things that make me wonder, but I have no way to really confirming any of my suspicions as I have no one to play with.

Still, I guess I can't expect too much, the poor devs have been working on the same sort of platformer and engine for I don't know how many years now, it can't be easy to come up with good visions and the excitement you need to make a good game given those circumstances.

Hopefully Yacht Club Games will get their mojo back if they find something entirely different to work on.

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

Finished up the first Digital Devil Saga game.  I'd owned them for years, then lost them in a move, but reacquired them late last year for dirt cheap, still brand new!  Who knew PS2 RPGs could still be bought at a decent price and factory sealed no less xD

Anyway, solid entry in the series (though it's not really TECHNICALLY an SMT game.)  It's quite a bit more accessible than SMT games tend to be but still has a pretty visceral bite (HYUK THE GAME IS ABOUT EATING YOUR ENEMIES!) with its difficult that kept me changing up my gameplan.

I like where the story's going through and though I'm not sure I'm gonna immediately jump into DDS 2, I know I'm in for a pretty good ride if the end of the first game is any indication.

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

Been playing Citrouille: Sweet Witches. I still haven't played it that much but I love it already! It's an arcadey sort of game where you have to touch all the deviant tiles to plant them with flowers while avoiding mobs. I could compare it to Pac-Man or Bubble Bobble or something, but it looks modern 2D and I just reaaaaally like the art style and animations, it's so cute and spoopy! yikes

It's tricky to spot some of the unplanted tiles sometimes once you've gotten a bit into the game, though. That's the only negative so far. And well... That it wouldn't run on my Linux compy, that was a huge bummer. Not sure if it's just that the software on that one is pretty old or what. It's a real bummer. ._.

But at least I can play it, and it's fun!

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

Have been playing nothing but Cookie Run: Ovenbreak lately. When you don't feel like doing anything except sleep when you're not at work, sometimes an endless runner with cute, literally-candy-coated graphics is all you want to play.

And, I mean, it's not bad. There's gacha elements, sure, and you could just drop a lot of real cash to buy the Good Shit, but the game itself is based enough in skill and memorization that learning how to play stages with frame-perfect jumps to maximize your current skill set is fun enough. Plus, everything's (theoretically) accessible without having to drop a dime into the game, so I'm not feeling I need to put in a dollar or ten to avoid ungodly grinding.

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

So after playing a lot of actioney games for a good long while, I ended up starting on Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC. Oh man, the writing in this game is something else! It's just soo far and away better and different from any game I've ever played. The only thing that could kind of challenge it would be MOTHER 3, but because that game is very much made to be just one complete story versus the Trails games being a story spanning this great big series, it's not really an apples-to-apples comparison. But in terms of how the narrative is approached, it's about the only thing I've encountered that's even in the same sort of ballpark. Though MOTHER 3 feels more like a long-form movie in the way it is framed and told. But what Trails does in terms of character writing still is in a whole different world to even MOTHER 3.

My one gripe with Trails in the Sky FC - and unfortunately the whole series - is that it still is a JRPG: Meaning stats, random encounters, turn-based combat, quests, levelling, equipment all that... Garbage. Which sort of makes me wish I liked the game more than I do, but I have a real hard time with just... RPGs. Still, it makes these systems far less offensive than most games in the genre, so that's something. If only the combat was a bit faster.

I thought I'd stay away from the next game in the series for a while, even though I certainly would like to finish them all eventually.

...That didn't happen. ._.;

I am now playing Trails in the Sky SC, and man... The writing just keeps up being fantastic! yikes

Though I also started poking at Dustforce once again. Dustforce is another incredible game, but for completely different reasons. This game IS game-feel! This is why you play this game! Why you grind away at it, to get better, it is because it feels so fucking good, any other reason is unnecessary! I have never encountered this in any game before, ever!

I mean, I don't like speed-running! I don't like grinding! But when faced with this game, it feels like the most natural thing in the world! There is something sublime going on here! Though I will also hazard a warning that... This game is kind of unforgiving, and it isn't necessarily intuitive. There are a lot of nuances to how your character moves and it's frankly difficult to wrap your head around it all, and to understand it. I am not there yet, not by a long shot. But I can see where the road goes - it's just a matter of putting one foot in front of the other.

Dustforce has such a unique weighty feel to it, despite being very floaty and fast too.  I've never played a game before that felt quite like it.  It's a game I really wish I was better at xD
