In this short, cute visual novel I go over the best games I played in 2021 with some commentary on each!

That's a cool and interesting way to do a game of the year list, right? That was the thought anyway. Not to mention, 2021 was absolutely stacked with amazing games, so why not do something a little special for a year of gaming that was trying extra hard in the middle of some more than trying times.

The idea for this one also happened on an episode of the Sockscast probably a few weeks before we were to record that year's Game of the Year episodes. It may have even been DURING recording the Game of the Year episodes, because I know I didn't have a huge amount of time to get this together before my decided release date of Christmas Day. Anyway, the idea was sparked by a one-off comment about how someone at some point would turn in their game of the year list in some incredibly new and weird format. Maybe even making it its own videogame.

With that idea cooking, originally this project was to maybe be a cute little platformer with a little linear map that led you to each game, with little texty bits in the background giving my commentary on that specific game. Each area of the map would also be themed to each game somehow, maybe by coloring the tilesets to something resembling each game's main colors and/or having some screenshots scattered around.

This quickly became an idea that felt a little too ambitious to handle in the 2-3 weeks or so that I had to put it together, so I opted for the next (and arguably most obvious genre solution people know me for these days): A visual novel.

Once the creativity started flowing though, writing for this little project was a delight. Who knew writing about things you like could be so fun, right?

Using my VTuber model to give the overall tone something a little more silly than our Game of the Year shows are was really fun. The writing came really fast and the brief little intermission segments were just a result of me letting my brain run around and do stupid silly little things that made me laugh.

It really was also fun to just *write* about videogames again. I don't do that a lot these days since you hear my thoughts either during streams, Let's Plays, or Podcasts. I had to find fun ways to keep with the jovial tone of the voice I was using while also getting across my thoughts about all of these games I liked a whole lot, and it was a fun little exercise.

This is an idea I may revisit again someday (maybe even in that cute little platformer form) if a year of gaming ever ends up as absolutely stacked for me as this particular year did.
