HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

I've felt like these topics where we just sorta talk about the stuff currently on our videroogame plates is a great, easy entry for awkward lurkers like me to shoot the shit, so here I gooooo~

Even though my Twitch stream of it is currently on hiatus, I still maintain the first Fire Emblem on the NES is a real solid strategy RPG for the system. Been playing a lot of it on the Family Computer Online service on Switch, and it's a pretty easy game to get into for those learning hiragana/katakana!

Though, the existing fan-translation for it is perfectly serviceable, so it's whatevs.

Also have been playing a fair bit of Super Mario Maker 2. Like everyone else with a Switch, apparently.

Right now I'm going through Grandia 1 via the HD Collection on Switch. My opinion on the game so far (30 hours in) is basically FEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENNNAAAAA and "Yeah this is a really good RPG with lots of charm."

Perhaps cheating a bit, but Astral Chain is next on my to-do list now that it's only 4 days away.

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

I kinda... blasted through a replay of Grandia using the HD version that came out on Switch. It was basically the best time ever though, even with the various music and sound issues that the port has. It's still one of the best games ever so it's totally worth it.

I finished a story of Fire Emblem 3 houses, and feel great depression.
Im also doing non storymode stuff in FFXIV like knitting sweaters and collecting tree logs.

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

I've had 3D Land slotted in my 3DS for a while now, playing bits of it while watching streams. It's lovely, but I find myself being pulled back into Mario Maker 2 custom stages for a quick platformer hit, since I usually have the house Switch undocked xD

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

I kind of messed up my left thumb due to repetitive strain, so I've only been doing light gaming lately. I've been picking away at the original Legend of Zelda on the Switch NES classics, and the other night I had a go at the Shinobi III cart I scored at a convention vendor table. In other ninja game news, I've been occasionally playing The Messenger on Switch, but I'm not entirely wild about how that one plays. Maybe it would feel better if I had a Pro Controller.

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

Hope your thumb gets better soon Beepner, wishin' you well!

I'm alternating between a bunch of longish games... right now my immediate focus is on LUCAH's new free DLC, "The Descent". It's an hour-long enemy gauntlet styled after some of the extra modes in Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, and if you fail it boots you right back to the start. It's basically LUCAH: 1cc edition and I'm having a great time learning it. I've sunk four or five hours in now... mostly it's taking a long time 'cause I'm stubbornly sticking to the build I think is the most fun even if it's non-optimal.

Currently working on Steamworld Heist, the company that made it merged with one of my favorites last year, Zoink, so it's going to be interesting to see how they work together on games in the future.

That, and my addiction to Culdcept Revolt for 3DS. I never thought that mixing monopoly with MTG could be so addictive.

Final Fantasy I, but the remake on GameBoy Advance. I find it surprisingly fun, maybe because it's tough? Just a generic Warrior, Red Mage, White Mage, Black Mage build.

Final Fantasy I is the most charming game, plus it has some of my favorite 2D dungeon layouts everrrr. They've got all these varied gorgeous shapes, it's THE example I point to for making thoughtful psychological rpg maps without relying on gimmicks.

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

I've been meaning to revisit the original NES version of FF1 here lately. Ogling through that game's detailed maps and bestiary was a cornerstone of my formative years, and it was one of the first NES roms I played extensively (but never beat). I feel like, by playing through the PS1 version with a Fighter/Red Mage party, I've kinda robbed myself of a more textured, in-depth experience with the game.

In between Fire Emblem and Mario, I've been dabbling with Chasm on the PSVita. The controls and general game-feel feels lifted straight from SotN, but it's structured more like Diablo, with a hub-world that slowly expands through the game. The level design and general aesthetic has been pretty bland so far, but Hard mode has been kicking my ass and keeping things somewhat interesting.

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

I've been playing Minoria today.  It's the spiritual follow-up to Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight which is one of my favorite explorey platformers.

A funny story about it though is that when I started playing it, up to around an hour and a half or so, the experience wasn't so great.  The game had a lot of issues that made it feel very amateurish such as combos getting you stuck inside enemy models to do contact damage over and over and killing you in a pretty quick manner.  It made almost all offense seem pretty pointless.  As I was about to refund the game for feeling...well...bad...the dev released a patch and I decided to give it another chance before going the refund route.

The patch didn't really fix ALL my concerns (parrying is still largely hit or miss) but the biggest issue I had with offense seems to mostly be fixed with combos not sticking you into enemy models and contact damage seems to be about 50% of what it was before.  Still an issue, but not as BIG of an issue.

So how's the game?  If I were to compare it directly to Momodora: RUtM, I don't think this game really cuts it (HYUK!).  Momodora has a very snappy and immediate feel to it, whereas a lot of actions in Minoria can feel very mushy and like you're fighting your way through a vat of mashed potatoes.  It does have an interesting story going so far though, and the boss fights have been a pretty big highlight (because they'll literally obliterate you in 1-3 hits if you're not paying attention.)  We'll have to see how the rest of it pans out.  I'm enjoying it so far, just not quite as much as I wish I was.

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

Huh, sounds weird that it would launch with these kinds of problems, since it's not their first rodeo. Maybe a case a being over-ambitious with the combat system?

Reverie Under the Moonlight wasn't really my thing, despite it being the game that caught on with the larger community, I still kind of preferred Momodora 3.

Wow that sounds awful, Polly! D:
I would've gone for the refund anyway.

I do wonder a bit if I should've played the NES version instead, but I have my GBA right next to my bed and it's good to have something portable with all the thunderstorms lately. Bedsides, I just like portables.

Also the spell animations look baller in this version. Fira looks great!

I ended up actually finishing it in 2 sittings xD  I didn't have much going on today so I kinda blazed through it.  I'll have more concrete thoughts on it soon.

I don't know if the GBA version maintains this quirk, but the NES version doesn't re-direct attacks if an enemy dies before an assigned attack launches.  So if you targeted a Fire 1 at an ogre, but it died before the spell went off, Fire 1 would still go off but it'd be a wasted attack because it's not redirected xD  That made things roooough.

I WANT to like Momodora III, but for some reason the way it feels doesn't jive with me.  Since I'm in Momodora-adjacent territory though, I think I'mma give it another shot since I'm also feeling the urge to give Reverie Under the Moonlight a runback.

I finished Minoria though and coming in fresh off of it, I'm conflicted.  I had a pretty immediate "BLEH" reaction to it, but the most recent patch DID help make things feel a bit better to me.  I think there's just a "First time out in a new engine" feeling that the game has that's kinda unavoidable and I think that's why there's parts of it that still feel pretty meh to me, but at the moment I can't say I hated my time with it and I am gonna give the map one more run through with the secret detector, so we'll see how I feel about it come the next Sockscast.

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

I liked Reverie Under the Moonlight a whole lot, I didn't come away from it though feeling like, "these folks know EXACTLY what they're doing and can do no wrong." (Like with Hollow Knight for instance.) I think it's mainly 'cause Reverie's story didn't connect with me, the true end felt weak.

That plus the early games being really jank AND the dev backing out of making a full 3D game when that's clearly what he wanted to do 'cause of audience pressure... Basically I never really expected Minoria to be a masterpiece, "good cute thing with some issues" was about what I was hoping for.

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

I liked where the story was going in Minoria, but I don't think they knew where it was going by the time it got to the end and I really didn't quite understand what either resolution, good or bad, meant.

And yeah, I'm still pretty pissed the guy let himself be bullied into making another 2D game when he clearly wanted to make something more open and 3D.  I wish he'd have just charged forward and showed them instead of giving in.

Re: HEY YOU! PART TWO! WHATCHA PLAYIN'?

3D games are a really vital and interesting space for solo devs or small teams lately, I was interested in seeing his take on it. AH WELL

I'm glad he at least explored 3D with the graphics, RotM pushed the pixel porn soooooo haaaaard and I don't know if there was more room to grow there.

Nah, it's assigned a new random target. I guess it has some quality-of-life improvements like that. But maybe people like having to plan every attack that carefully? I'm not sure. Either way - I'm having fun, so I'll just keep going. ... If only I knew where I was going now. I beat the Lich and found my way to Crescent Lake but there didn't seem to be anything to really do there? I feel like I'm missing something.

If you've beaten the Lich, you should be able to obtain an important item in Crescent Lake.
