15 - Okami (WII)

Strongest Point: Amaterasu's (henceforth known as Ammy) characterization. The game goes to great lengths to portray Ammy as a wolf first, god of all creation second.

Something I would like to get out of the way first: I would much rather have played the PS2 version. Implementing waggle in the game is a good idea in theory, but it fails miserably in execution. With these gripes aside, I move on.

I haven't even finished this game, and it's on my list. Why? It's that damn good. What impressed me most were the graphics, actually. I haven't ever been wowed like when you bloom a sacred tree, and the taint is pushed back by the green and blue of healthy land. Suffice to say, it's an amazingly well-done effect. I really can't put my finger on why I like this game. I just do. It's everything Zelda has done or tried to do, only better, in this man's opinion. I loves me some Zelda games, don't get me wrong, but Okami is just better. Damn shame that Clover Studios only got out the two games, they could have been another wonder company in the vein of Treasure or (in my opinion) tri-Ace.

14 - The Last Blade 2 (NEO-GEO)

Strongest Point: The presentation. The sprites weren't topped until Guilty Gear X rolled along.

The Last Blade 2 is the greatest fighter nobody's ever played, and the only traditional fighter I will probably ever be able to play competently. Catching a link from Pat's HG101 Darkstalkers article (thanks Pat), I saw the game and thought "that looks cool. After figuring out what MAME was, I got this game, and god damn was it worth it. It plays, essentially, like Samurai Shodown, only offensively-oriented instead of being a tech-hit cokefest. The cast is great, my personal favorite being mass-murderer-turned-zombie Mukuro because he's a blast to play. Imagine Voldo from any given Soul Calibur game, only without the gay, and you get Mukuro. Another reason that I love him so much is an IRC conversation I had once (paraphrased because I lost the logs with my hard drive).

Pitch: MUKURO.
Pitch: >:I
*** Pitch changed nick to Mukuro
Mukuro: watch me spam giant projectiles!
* Mukuro spams

13 - Sonic 3 & Knuckles (GENESIS)

Strongest Point: The Doomsday Zone. It was the first time Sonic Team let you really cut loose with Super Sonic. On the flip side, it also gave them the idea of removing Super Sonic from levels and just giving him one stage at the end.

Welcome to the majority of my childhood. I played through this game so god damn much I really did have it down to a science. I had the "big ring" locations pretty much all memorized, so I could generally manage Super Sonic/Knux by about the third zone out of 12/14. After that, the rest of the game was grab a ring, double jump and spam city here I come. On my old cart, I had eight perfect files, two with each character.

12 - Shadow of the Colossus (PS2)

Strongest Point: Seeing as how the game consists of nothing but a bunch of landscape and 16 boss fights, I'm going to go with the soundtrack, some of the better songs are included.

What can I honestly say about the game? You already know it. You're plopped down into a giant world, and the disembodied voice of God is telling you to kill 16 really big things, known as Colossi. There's a huge landscape, which is fun to explore, but there's nothing to do except kill the 16 Colossi. They're are great boss battles and the ending is great, but what stands out to me the most is the music. Composed by the legendary Kow Ootani, the man behind the equally incredible Haibane Renmei OST, it's easily some of the best stuff I've ever heard in a videogame. I'd put it above FFVI's score, another incredible body of work. Some of my favorites are listenable (in part) here because of Polly's awesome Flash prowess.

For those interested in a fuller (albeit a far more fanboy'd view) reivew of the game, HG101 provides. Should you read it, I can tell you that he speaks truths about the camera.

11 - Kirby Superstar (SNES)

Strongest Point: Milky Way Wishes.

I like Kirby. He's got a great series going for him, some very entertaining platformers, even if they're directed by the best troll in the existence of man (Sakurai). Superstar is the best of them for one reason. In all other Kirby games, copy abilities conferred one UND PRECISELY VON ability upon you. In Superstar, they gave you a whole movelist to dork around with, and the fact that there are 15 distinct copy abilities gives you a lot to play around with. In related news, K:SS confirmed for the DS. I shat brix.
